Last January we featured broach bouquets (click here to see the post). Its a fun alternative, especially in the winter when flowers are not "in season" for northwest Ohio. And unlike flowers, these beauties will last forever!

My favorite broach bouquet is made of buttons, pins and other vintage jewelry pieces that are family heirlooms. For instance, maybe the buttons from your grandmother's gown, or use one of her favorite pins.... Maybe a pair of earrings your mom wore in the 80's! Go creative and add some color or be classic with vintage silver, gold or ivory tones. I just love this silver bouquet below!

Crowning & Cunning: Wendy Kromer's Cookie Decorating Class

Yesterday, my mom and I were in for a real treat - literally. We took Wendy Kromer's Cookie Decorating class. If you aren't familiar with Wendy, well she is a fabulously talented wedding cake designer, who aside from creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces for my clients, she also designs cakes for Martha Stewart Weddings. In fact, she was just in NYC creating wedding cake stories for the spring Weddings issue the week before our class.

The cookie class was a quick 3-hours that included her fabulous cookie and icing recipes for flooding techniques. I highly recommend this class to anyone of all skill levels. Wendy taught us some clever ways to make eye-popping designs. Check them out:

Crowning Celebration: Thank you for a great season!

Yesterday was our last wedding of the 2011 season ~ and oh, what a season it was! Yesterday's wedding was no exception to the remarkable and genuinely fabulous couples we got to work with this year. I learned new "tricks" and tools to making my business even better, pushed the envelope on some design ideas, created new looks and hopefully some new trends and I made new friends along the way.

One thing that has always remained the same (and continues to hold true next season) is that my work will always be about the QUALITY not the quantity of weddings. Budget big or small, the attention to detail, personalized service and unique design will always come first. For me, the year cannot be measured in the amount of weddings we produced, but rather the quality and tailored service we give our clients.

Thank you to all our 2011 couples and their families ~ Wishing you many happy memories from this fabulous year!!!

September 24th is a very special day for me. It marks my Wedding Anniversary with my wonderful husband! We just celebrated 6 years.

But September 24th is also the day that Amy & James said "I DO"! I couldn't have chosen a nicer couple to work with on my Anniversary than Amy and James! They are so in love and so appreciative to all their family and friends for joining them from near and afar in their celebration. Amy was so gracious and lovely. It was an honor to be by Amy's side and fluff her gown, straighten her veil and wish her all the best as she walked down the aisle to her groom - just as someone did for me 6 years ago.

Yesterday I had the great joy and pleasure of visiting one of my best friends, Vanessa, in South Bend. Aside from a girl's lunch and gab session, I got to shop her fabulous store, Flourish Boutique and Gallery.

Flourish carries fashions from designers like Samuel Dong, Seven for All Mankind, Tulle, Treska, Judith March, Lisse, Tarina Tarantino, not to mention a fabulous jewelry line from Tangerine!

As you shop the clothes, you can shop the art. Vanessa boutique includes art for purchase, with even a few items created by Vanessa herself.

{Don't you just love this saying in the changing rooms??? My husband didn't call - but I still bought whatever I wanted!!!}

Vanessa and I were college roommates and art majors at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana. We shared a studio in the fibers department. Before portable DVD players, we would drag my TV and her DVD player down to the studio to watch old episodes of Sex in the City until the security guards kicked us out!

Vanessa has taken her love for fashion and textiles and opened a chic, fun boutique. I have taken my love for design and textiles and applied that to event design creating one of a kind events. Its fun to look back and think that we've each achieved our dream of putting our mark on art, fashion and design.

Crowning Celebration: Labor Day's Labor of Love Wedding

Its kinda fitting that today we are celebrating Labor Day because this weekend's wedding included a handful of talented vendors
that 'labored' their talents to produce a fabulous event.

Amongst our dream team of wedding professionals was the fabulously creative Wendy Kromer of Wendy Kromer Confections and the City Bake Shop. If you are not sure who Wendy is, just pick up a copy of Martha Stewart Weddings. As you marvel over the deliciously decorated cakes, read closely at the credits. Wendy is Martha Stewart's cake designer. And when Wendy is not designing for Martha, she calls Sandusky, Ohio her home.

When our bride originally planned her wedding cake, it was modeled after Donald and Melania Trump's five-tiered, 3,000 rose covered wedding cake. But after meeting with Wendy, the bride was so impressed by Kromer's creativity
that she wanted a one-of-a-kind creation.

Using details from one of the Bride's three wedding dresses, a Kenneth Pool duchess satin with silver thread embroidery, pearls and crystals, and the bride's Reem Acra flower embroidered veil and lace bolero, Kromer created a beautifully, detail-oriented cake.

The cake tasted just a great as it looked! The flavors included:

I remember my first consultation with bride Katie. When I asked her to tell me about her fiance, Ed, she was just glowing! She smiled and laughed as she described her husband-to-be. She was most definitely in love

and very excited about her upcoming wedding - in less than 6 weeks!

When Katie and I met, she only had the church and ceremony site and her photographer booked! Katie and Ed each have their own businesses and were very busy. I was happy to assist Katie in finding top-notch professionals for she and Ed's wedding day.

Katie's gown had a cathedral-length train, which was fitting for her ceremony at Rosary Cathedral. To complete the look, Katie had a 27 foot veil!

It was majestic as she walked down the aisle!!!

In addition to planning, I also designed Katie and Ed's wedding program, menu card, table number card, escort cards, and favor cards that went on boxes of truffles.

Crowning Inspiration: Wedding Invitation Wording

The invitation can be one of the most difficult tasks a bride can do. So if you have already ordered yours, take a sigh of relief. But if its still on your to-do list, then this is for you.

The invitation sets the tone of the wedding. You don't have to break the bank on expensive letterpress or exquisite papers. But you don't want to go chipper-cheap (as I call it). Your paper shouldn't be anything less than 100lb. But my rule of thumb is 110lb at least. It should hold well in the hand, nice and firm. And if it doesn't, it will not hold up well in the mail and your guests will receive it with damaged edges or worse yet, creases.

The wording of your invitation is still very much rooted in etiquette. Its probably the most etiquette-binding formality left of the wedding.

Crowning Celebration: Marisa & Eddie

If there was ever a couple to define the term "sweethearts" Marisa and Eddie would be it. Not only were they each other's sweethearts from grade school (in which they dated on and off until college), they were sweethearts to work with! Marisa was super organized and on top of the details, which I loved! Not only were Marisa and Eddie great to work with, but so were their families! It truly was one of those weddings that united two cultures, two traditions, two families and two people.

Marisa's heritage is Mexican and Hungarian. Eddie's heritage is Italian and Greek. This was "My Big Fat Mexican-Hungarian-Italian-Greek Wedding"! The service at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral was packed with their closest friends and family. I am so impressed how many people came out to witness their vows. {Usually people skip ahead to the party}. During the service Father Ari welcomed Marisa's Mexican heritage as they not only performed the Greek Crowning Ceremony, but the Mexican Lasso Ceremony. The wedding crowns (stefana) are signs of the glory and honour with which God crowns the bride and groom during the sacrament. The crowns are joined by a ribbon which symbolizes unity, and the presence of Christ who blesses and joins the couple and establishes them as the king and queen of their home, which they will rule with wisdom, justice and integrity. The priest takes the two crowns and blesses the bride and the groom, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and then places the crowns on them. The koumbaro or koumbara then steps behind the bride and the groom and interchanges the crowns three times as a witness to the sealing of the union.

The Lasso, which also affirms their union and commitment, was handmade and presented by the bride's cousin from California.

And at the end of the service, the groom's father presented the thirteen coins to the groom to give to his bride. The thirteen coins are a symbol of the groom's unquestionable trust and confidence placed in her as his beloved wife and gives the responsibility of all of his material to her. The acceptance on her part assures him back of her total love and dedication in looking after him, his possessions and her unconditional love.

I have to thank Father Ari and Pres at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral for allowing Marisa and Eddie to use biodegradable confetti! Guests had fun with it, as did Marisa and Eddie. Check out these great shots!!!

At the reception Marisa and Eddie continued with some touches to signify their heritage. We hung hand-cut paper banderas over the dance floor. They were gorgeous and very intricate! Marisa and Eddie surprised their guest with an authentic Mariachi band to serenade guests during dinner. They were fabulous!

Guests sipped on sangria and enjoyed Greek pastries.

Decorative Sound did an awesome job mixing traditional Greek and Salsa music with modern music. Guests had so much fun - I have not seen a dance floor that packed all night in a LONG time!!! The party was going strong until the very end.

Crowning & Cunning: Keep your Bridal Cool this Summer

Summer is here and in Northwest Ohio its goning to be in the 90's this weekend!

Here are some tips to stay cool and fresh:
1. Pack blotting tissues or powder. I prefer the tissues over the powder so that you do not get any on your dress. Blot the tissues after pre-ceremony photos, before post-ceremony photos and then before your reception so that you look make-up fresh.
2. Bring baby wipes. Even if its to wipe away some sweat, or fix runny eye make-up they are great to have on hand and they remove dirt from your wedding gown.
3. Stay hydrated and start NOW. If you hydrate your body properly before the big day, you can enjoy a few cocktails without letting the heat get the best of you. If you wait until wedding day, you will be consuming a lot of liquids which means many trips to the bathroom.
4. In your post-ceremony celebration cooler, also pack in a seperate zip lock some clean wash cloths and ice. The ice will gradually melt and the wash cloths will be cool and damp to place on the back of your neck, on your wrists and forehead. Some Churches do not have AC, so be sure to bring these with you to your ceremony and for all your pictures.

Yesterday the weather cleared and the breeze brought in cooler air just in time for

Marisa & Eddie's Greek Orthodox Ceremony at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church.

Here is a shot I captured from the balcony.

The mosaics and gold details are breath-taking. But in all the glory of the beautiful setting, I couldn't help but take in the traditional and spiritual ceremony that included both Greek and Mexican traditions. Two families were blended as one with both the Mexican Lasso and Greek Crowning (very fitting for a Crowning Celebration wedding!).

Wedding Planning should be fun! That is what I tell all my brides and their families. Apparently I have one bride who is having so much fun she jokingly admits she’d fake “cold feet” just to extend the warm and fuzzies of celebrating their upcoming nuptials.

Even after the last dance there are many ways to keep celebrating. It’s your first year of marriage. It’s a year like no other because you have yet to live it together. So why not make it special, create a few traditions and even better memories?

The reception maybe over, but the spotlight isn’t off. Keep family and close friends up to date on all your current adventures, trials, tribulations and hilarious moments. Start a blog to post pictures from your honeymoon, keep everyone updated on your remodeling projects or fun new activities.

Play hostess-with-the-mostess and utilize the china, cookware and fun serving wear you registered for. Don’t let it collect dust in the breakfront. Use it and love it. Didn’t register for china? If you asked for gift cards for a project or special purchase, invite guests over to enjoy the fruits of your labor or your new living room furniture. Also upload those pictures to the blog. Aunt Sally will love seeing her gift go to use!

And since you are throwing a party, why re-use some of your wedding decorations? Switch them up and give them a new use. Re-hang your paper lanterns from your patio umbrella, use the cake bling to make napkin rings or fill vases with floating candles to illuminate tables or walkways.

Ask your DJ or Band to make a mixed CD of the music from your wedding night. This is perfect for those nights when you stay in a cook together or when you friends come over for a night of fun and cocktails.

That way they have the exact version of the special song played.” said Baginski.

Start something new by taking up a new sport or activity. Join a softball team, or bowling league. Take a spin class at your gym, or volunteer. Keep your spirituality strong by finding a couple’s prayer group. No matter what your interests, make it your thing together.

April Reinhard and her husband Nathan took up cycling after their wedding, even traveling across country on road bikes together.

“Cycling has definitely impacted our marriage. Doing something physical and challenging together helps to strengthen not only our friendship but also our marriage relationship because we experience the highs: coasting down a big hill, and the lows: biking up a big hill, together,” said Mrs. Reinhard.

Start planning your second honeymoon. Discuss your finances and find ways to save money. By doing this you are opening dialogue to share your financial goals and expectations.

Communication is important, too. Use your left over wedding invitations to write each other little notes on the back. Take the time to express your appreciation and love. Just make sure you save one for the scrapbook.

A successful marriage is built on a good foundation. And as a wedding planner, I believe it should start with a good party! Keep the celebration going as you build your lives together. Here’s to many happy memories to come!

Whew - what a week! I have had some great consults with brides this week, along with networking mtgs with area pros. I love my job!

While I haven't had much time to actually blog this week, I want to share my two favorites from blogs I follow.

The first is from The Wedding Workbook Blog on the TOP SIX REASONS to hire a wedding planner/coordinator/conceirge/designer... we have multiple names and often wear multiple hats. Personally, I prefer "wedding coordinator and designer" because not only am I cooridnating the logistics, but designing a one-of-a-kind day!

1. Couples will save tons of time - Although a couple may know a thing or two about wedding planning, they don’t do this for a living, so they will have to spend lots of time and effort getting up to speed, not to mention all the effort required managing all the details of wedding planning. By hiring a coordinator, they free up all that time and turn everything over to an expert who will get everything done in a fraction of the time that it would have taken them.

2. They will save money – The couple probably doesn’t have firmly established relationships with many wedding vendors, doesn’t have much leverage in negotiating with them and doesn’t know the going rates of what they should pay for wedding venues, catering, DJs, transportation, etc. Coordinators, on the other hand, have all this information at their fingertips and can probably negotiate much better rates than they can, and these savings can offset some or maybe even all the fees they would pay a coordinator.

3. Coordinators will help protect couples from mistakes and fraud – Every bride wants her day to be perfect and error-free. Although there are always a few issues with any event, hiring a professional will help ensure there are a minimum of issues (plus, when there are issues, coordinators know how to resolve them promptly). As a seasoned wedding professional, we have probably seen it all, so we know all the tips and tricks for avoiding mistakes and slipups. In addition, coordinators can help them avoid being defrauded by a shady vendor by helping them navigate the minefield of vendor selection and negotiation.

4. Couples can focus on more important matters - Brides and grooms have enough on their plate with family, friends and social commitments besides trying to manage a handful of vendors and thousands of intricate details. Their wedding should be a day of bliss and enjoyment, not one of work and worry, and hiring a coordinator will let them relax and enjoy every moment.

5. Millions of people hire specialists every day – Couples themselves probably hire specialists to take care of tasks in which they lack expertise (like fixing their car or doing their accounting) or don’t have the time to do themselves (like housecleaning). Planning a wedding is a very big job, especially for someone who doesn’t regularly plan events, with little margin for error, so it only makes sense to turn it over to someone who is an expert.

6. The job will get done right – When you try to take on a big project that is beyond your area of expertise, there’s always that fear that you are making errors and leaving out important steps … and you are probably right. So, by hiring an expert, couples can have the peace of mind that the job will get done the right way and that their wedding is in the hands of someone very capable of making their dream day come true.

1. Local Flavor: pick your favorites and include them. Even if it's something you make yourself or mom's cookies. It adds the comforts of home to your guests stay in Toledo.

2. Greater Toledo Guide from the Toledo Convention & Visitors Bureau. These are free if you call ahead and place an order for the number of guides you will need. Included are maps, reviews, restaurants and area attractions for cities and suburbs in the greater Toledo area.

Who doesn't love shoes?! Whether yours are high, platform, flat, kitten-healed, rubber-bottomed, laced-up, zipped-up or slipped on, a girl has to have her shoes!

A trend we have been seeing for a few years is the wedding day "statement" shoe. Brides are expressing their wedding day colors and personality. A growing trend this year is the ultimate sparkly, crystal-embellished shoe {as seen in my last post}

A few tips to insure the perfect pair:

- As popular as shoes are, its still all about the dress. You shoes should compliment your wedding day style - not overshadow or out-shine your dress. In other words, your shoes should complete the look, no steal the show.

- As fun as trends are, don't let them steer you away from your wedding day style. If you are reserved and graceful, go for a vintage, classic shoe in a softer color. But if you are loud and wild, go for a brighter shoe with accents.

- Comfort is key! You will spend a long day on your feet standing, dancing and walking. If you are questioning the comfort of your wedding shoes ask if they are returnable. Then take them home and walk around on the carpet. If you cannot make it an hour, you will not be able to break them.

- For some extra cushion be sure to check out Dr. Scholl's inserts. They also make great tokens to tuck into bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride gifts.

- After your shoes are photographed and admired, you can add some extra traction to make sure you don't slip down the aisle. I love Foot Petals. They come in white for lighter-colored soles.

Before you say your "I Dos", there are a few photographs every bride must have: your bridal gown (without you in it), your shoes, your wedding bands & wedding day jewelry, your invitation, program and any other stationery used (menus, escort cards, place cards, welcome bag tags, etc.) and finally your bouquet (before its over handled, nudged and petals are bruised).

All escort cards should have last names with a suffix, ("Jr.", "III", etc.) when necessary and be organized alphabetically.

If you are choosing to assign the seat of your guest at each table, then you will need a place card. The place card has one name per card, vs. the escort card has two names (or one name if attending solo). The place card can be on a menu, or tied to the napkin, placed on a glass, chair or above the plate. No matter where it is, it must be visible and easy to find to avoid confusion and delayed seating. If its too complicated it could delay the time your dinner is served, thus your food will be sitting under a warmer or in a

hot box continuing to cook and dry out.

One final tip: make a few extra "blanks" in case you need to change the seating arrangement, someone brings an unexpected guest, or you have a guest that didn't RSVP.

She has chosen a black and green color scheme. We are going to play on this chic, elegant color tone and tie in elements of nature with some branching, curly willow and even some dramatic trees. I have been savoring her Martha Stewart Wedding magazines for years... in fact my childhood room could have qualified for Hoarders with all the wedding magazines I saved over the years! I woke up one day and found recycling to be just as gratifying! I burned those issues to the brain! (wink, wink)

My latest crave is for tea. Since giving up coffee in November, I have found not only better health benefits, but a passion for a very old tradition.

Served hot or cold, its always satisfying.

I am turning my love for tea, and well, the country's new fad, into a tea bar for a wedding.

Traditionally, tea was commonly served at a Chinese marriage ceremony - and still is. But that is not the only place you will find it these days. "Tea Bars" are taking over the esspresso bars at weddings and events.

In the traditional Chinese marriage ceremony, both the bride and groom kneel in front of their parents and serve them tea. That is a way to express their gratitude. In front of their parents, it is a practice for the married couple to say, "Thank you for bringing us up. Now we are getting married. We owe it all to you." The parents will usually drink a small portion of the tea and then give them a red envelope, which symbolizes good luck. Another variant is for the to-be daughter-in-law to serve tea to her to-be parents-in-law, symbolizing that she is to become a part of the latter's family. Drinking the tea by all guests at the wedding symbolized acceptance into the family.

In a way, I like to think of it as toasting new life and happiness.

If you're planning a wedding and are about to get married, you know this is going to be an unforgettable year-- that's certainly something to toast to!
As you think about your New Year's Resolutions, why not include some to make wedding planning a little less stressful?!

1. (Cardinal Rule) I will not do anything... before I contract a wedding coordinator. She will be my right hand and guide to a fabulous celebration!

2. I will not end up on YouTube for the wrong reason nor will I let others dampen my mood with their crazy horror stories or silly dramas.

3. I will take good care of my nails. They are jewels not tools.

4. I will not use my Facebook status as a personal wedding journal.

5. I will trust my vendors.

6. I will not feel guilty about having an "adults-only" reception.

7. I will attempt (at least a little) DIY and remind myself now and then its not DYI (Drive Yourself Insane).

8. I will acknowledge that some people might not want to be the "guest book attendant."

9. I will eat the dinner at my reception and take more than just a bite of my scrumptious wedding cake.

10. I will look on the bright side no matter what. My smile is my best accessory.

Recently we posted a Crowning Celebrations Engagement Tip on Engagement Journals. While searching for the perfect handmade journal, we came across these fabulous finds perfect for scrapbooking or journalling your honeymoon!
